New Press Makes Big Impact on the Shop Floor

New Press

After two years of meticulous planning and development, Compco Industries proudly announces that its new 2,000-ton triple-action hydraulic press, along with auxiliary equipment, is fully operational. Installed this summer at Compco’s facility in Columbiana, Ohio, the state-of-the-art North American-built press and parts washer are now complemented by additional equipment to process large tank heads for various industries.

A Transformative Investment

Matt Werner, president of Compco, highlights the far-reaching impact of this investment:

“This press and supporting equipment provide new opportunities and backup capabilities that protect the interests of our customers, team members, and stakeholders,” Werner said.

He also credited Rick Fryda, Compco’s CEO, for spearheading the initiative and aligning the team to achieve this milestone. Werner expressed gratitude for the Smith family, Compco’s owners, whose commitment to reinvesting in the business ensures the company remains at the forefront of innovation.

A Legacy of Dedication

The press line’s development was led by Russ Werner, plant manager and senior leader with 42 years at Compco. Starting as a general laborer, Russ advanced through roles as a press operator, supervisor, and superintendent, ultimately becoming a key figure in this groundbreaking project.

Reflecting on the achievement, Russ shared:

“It is a dream come true to see this line fully functional. We’ve worked diligently with local suppliers to manufacture and automate this line. Seeing it all come together is incredible and exciting for Compco’s future. Now we need to fill it up with work!”

Russ’s deep expertise and unwavering dedication inspired the team throughout the project. As a tribute, the new press was designated “32”, a nod to Russ’s competitive spirit as an athlete in East Palestine, Ohio.

Matt Werner emphasized his father’s leadership:

“He’s an unbelievable leader and teacher at Compco. His passion to perfect throughput on this line is just another example of why we are so proud to learn from him.”

Project Highlights and Future Plans

Sam Hank, project manager, praised the collaborative efforts:

“We are thrilled to see the finished product of all the hard work from our suppliers, contractors, local officials, and the Compco team. This is the single largest asset purchase in Compco’s history and a significant addition to our press room capabilities.”

The press, currently running hemispheres and large semi-elliptical heads ranging from 48 to 72 inches, will also support new projects requiring a large bed size and higher tonnage. To accommodate the press, a 5,500-square-foot expansion began in late 2023, creating a customized space for the equipment.

Compco has also partnered with local companies to supply auxiliary components, including a washer, trimmer, and robotics. Plans are underway to expand the workforce to operate the press continuously, alongside the company’s other equipment.

Looking Ahead

The successful installation and operation of this advanced press signal a new era for Compco Industries. With enhanced capabilities and a legacy of leadership, the company is well-positioned to continue delivering top-quality products while embracing innovation and growth.
